AS THE DESIGNER FOR JULIAN KLINCEWICZ’S SELF-PUBLISHED BOOK, MAYHEM AT WAIMEA BAY (THE ALLEGORY OF THE SEA), I MANAGED THE ENTIRE PRINT PRODUCTION, MATERIAL SELECTION, AND PACKAGING TO SEAMLESSLY ALIGN THE PHYSICAL FORM WITH ITS ARTISTIC VISION. EACH HAND-NUMBERED COPY WAS HOUSED IN A MINIMALIST CARDBOARD BOX THAT DOUBLED AS A SIGNED, FRAMEABLE PRINT—ELEVATING THE PACKAGING INTO A PIECE OF THE ARTWORK ITSELF.

FROM THE ARTIST:

Mayhem At Waimea Bay (The Allegory of the Sea) is a self-published book by the artist Julian Klincewicz.⁣

Released in a public Edition of 400.
Offset printed in Belgium, 2023. Softcover,⁣
64 pp., 185.5 mm x 254 mm ⁣

Each book is hand numbered and comes with a custom box. The box is, in fact a signed, frame-able artist print, disguised as an unassuming cardboard box.⁣

The book contains 41 photographs, accompanied by a prose poem that runs 60 pages. Each image pairs perfectly with a line from the poem — creating a seamless harmony between text & image. The book is a journey into inspiration itself: An exploration of the artistic cycle, from burnout to rebirth and ultimately to the surrender of the unexpected.

Surfing the iconic waves of Hawaii’s Waimea Bay serves as a trojan horse for man’s neverending search for purpose & place in the world and the artist’s search for voice & inspiration. ⁣

The images are in Klincewicz’s signature style — highly textural and colorful, landing somewhere between landscape paintings & action sports photography. A combination of primitive expression and pop iconography.
